When an adult Christopher Robin is visited by his imaginary childhood friends, Walt Disney creates a predictable yet endearing movie – one that our house thoroughly enjoyed watching before the kids left for university in January.

There was one particular scene that stayed with me; an image of a grown-up Christopher Robin valiantly defending his childhood friends against the ever present Heffalumps and Woozles. Vile enemies that threaten their peace of mind; dangerous characters no one has ever seen, but who are rumoured to have the ability to expose – even terminate, their very existence.

Swamped with various to do lists, two new roles, an empty nest and a new business, I could recognise myself in the anxiety-stricken Pooh and friends. Everywhere I turned there were Heffalumps and Woozles shadow-dancing on the walls of my life…

What if we don’t get…”

Will I ever …?

Where will we find…?

How will she manage…?

Watching an adult Christopher Robin heroically, albeit reluctantly fighting off these nasty nobodies by pouncing on his briefcase with both feet, valiantly beating the air with his umbrella and launching a cloud of leaves, was a convincing performance alright! With wild cheers his play mates rallied around him. Delivered from extinction, called back from the frontlines of daily battles and ever-present fears, they recognized him as their long-lost childhood friend and saviour.

Two thoughts lingered. One is the sad realization that I too have mastered the art of conjuring up wild scenarios of improbable half-truths or in Pooh-language, Heffalumps and Woozles! Second is the comforting knowledge that I too have access to a heroic friend in Jesus. A Saviour who has delivered me, not only from any such ridiculous mind fabrications, but also One what has disarmed the principalities and powers that were ranged against us, triumphing over them in bold display, and that already 2000 years ago!

In Matthew 6 Jesus tackles this very issue of worry and anxiety, turning our attention to the birds – ‘free and unfettered, not tied down to a job description, careless in the care of God.’* Then He shows us the wildflowers – in colour and design, surpassing the magnificence of Solomon, soberly reminding us that we are of far greater worth!

And so, dear friends, let us in the contemporary language of The Message, ‘Steep our lives in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions,’ steering clear of a Heffalump-and-Woozle-mentality.
