Once you play the co-op, you will realize why there is no split screen. It wouldn't really work at all given the unique nature of the co-op. Remember, this is not the normal run of the mill co-op. One player can go insane and hallucinate and picture the other player and many other things as Necros, or other horrifying visages. Yes, you have to be in the same part of the story to play co-op together, and the only way to get all of the collectibles is in co-op. The collectibles have to be done in one save file too, the dlc is super short so you can grind out those revives on the first enemy.
